Speech model: Whisper large-v3-turbo, an open model. The open models we use
Pieces: Cut into pieces of 15 seconds or less, as for Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Thai: in our Japanese tests, longer pieces lost speech.
Spaces: Japanese is written without spaces between words, and transcripts keep it that way.

How accurate is Japanese transcription?

In our tests on FLEURS read-speech clips, 6.4%–7.0% of characters were wrong (measured 1 November 2026). Recordings with noise or people talking over each other score worse, and you can fix any word in the editor while you listen.

Does it label speakers in Japanese?

Yes. Speakers are told apart by their voices, not their words, so labels are made the same way in any language. Our tests so far were on English recordings.
